Motivation:

The aim of this course is to introduce students in numerical methods for

linear equations (direct and iterative solvers)
nonlinear equations
ordinary differential equations
optimization (basics only, if still enough time)
partial differential equations (basics only, if still enough time)

Different numerical methods for solving such problems will be discussed

by providing a brief theoretical background (contents and progress will be adjusted to the knowledge of the participants and are thus flexible - thus, no complete lecture notes will be provided, but only excerpts of different ones, where appropriate) and
by utilizing the commercial software package Matlab in order to solve some (practical) problems in the named areas.

A brief introduction to Matlab will be given at the beginning of the course and the usage of Matlab functions in our context will be demonstrated before they are to be applied by the students to solve some problems on their own.

Im Rahmen der Übungen sind die Aufgaben zu den verschiedenen Vorlesungsschwerpunkten entweder direkt in der Programmiersprache R zu erstellen oder anhand von Matlab-Lösungen in diese zu übertragen. Damit sollen die Grundkenntnisse für das Arbeiten mit Matlab (kostenpflichtig) und R (gratis verfügbar und in der Bioinformatik weit verbreitet) sowie verschiedener Zusatzpackages (ODEs, nonlinear and linear systems, etc.) im Rahmen dieser Lehrveranstaltung erlernt werden.
